Most business content is safe. Five tips, a checklist, a nice graphic. It’s fine, and it’s forgettable. The content that actually makes people remember you is thought leadership video: you, on camera, saying what you really believe about your industry.

I’ve seen it over and over in my own content. Pure tips get views. Strong opinions get comments, messages, and conversations. Here’s why opinions build trust, and how to turn yours into video without sounding like you’re just ranting.

What Thought Leadership Video Actually Means

Thought leadership sounds like a corporate buzzword. Strip that away and it’s simple: sharing a clear point of view that comes from real experience.

It’s not about being the loudest voice. It’s about being the person who explains how things really work, including the parts other people in your field won’t say out loud.

Why Strong Opinions Build Trust

They Prove You’ve Done the Work

You can’t have a strong opinion about something you’ve never done. When you take a clear stance, people can tell it came from experience.

They Help the Right People Find You

An opinion will turn some people off. That’s a good thing. The people who agree with you become your best customers, because they already share your approach.

They Start Conversations

Nobody comments on "five tips for success." Plenty of people comment when you say something they disagree with, or something they’ve been thinking but never heard anyone say.

The Formula for Thought Leadership Video

Here’s the formula I use. Pair a strong opinion with genuinely useful advice. The opinion grabs attention. The advice proves you’re not just being provocative for the sake of it.

  • State the opinion clearly in the first line.
  • Explain why you believe it, using real experience.
  • Give the viewer something useful they can do with it.
  • End with a question or a next step.

Without the advice, you’re just ranting. Without the opinion, you’re just another tips video.

How to Find Your Opinions for Thought Leadership Video

  • What do you disagree with in your industry’s standard advice?
  • What do customers believe that’s simply wrong?
  • What do you do differently from your competitors, and why?
  • What would you change about your industry if you could?
  • What did you believe five years ago that you don’t anymore?

Write down your answers and you’ll have a dozen strong videos ready to film.

How to Share Opinions Without Burning Bridges

Disagree with ideas, not people. Never name a competitor to tear them down. Back your opinion with your reasons, and admit when there are exceptions. You can be bold and still be fair.

Thought Leadership Video Mistakes

  • Picking fights just to get attention.
  • Sharing opinions with no advice or reasoning behind them.
  • Copying hot takes from big creators instead of using your own.
  • Softening every opinion until it says nothing at all.

Recording Your Opinions

Opinion videos are some of the easiest to record, because you already believe what you’re saying. You don’t need a script, just your opening line and your reasons. They also tend to come out best in the second half of a batch session, once you’ve warmed up and loosened up. You can see how sessions run on our Batch Sessions page.

FAQ: Thought Leadership Video

What if my opinion upsets people?

Some people will disagree, and that’s fine. As long as you’re respectful and back it up, disagreement usually builds engagement, not damage.

Do I need to be well known to do thought leadership?

No. You need real experience and a clear point of view. Being well known comes after.
