Before you hand your social media to anyone, you’ll sign something. Most business owners skim a social media management contract, check the price, and sign. Then three months in, they find out something they assumed was included isn’t, or they can’t figure out how to pause.

I’m not a lawyer, and this isn’t legal advice. But I’ve been on the provider side of a lot of these agreements, so here’s what I’d look at closely before signing, from both sides of the table.

What a Social Media Management Contract Should Spell Out

Exactly What’s Included Each Month

How many videos or posts, which platforms, how often they go out, and how many recording sessions. Vague language like "social media support" leaves too much room for disappointment.

What You Need to Provide

Recording time, feedback, approvals, access to accounts. Good agreements set expectations on both sides, not just the provider’s.

Turnaround and Approval

How quickly will content be delivered or posted? Do you approve everything before it goes live, or only certain things? Know this upfront.

What’s Not Included

Paid ads, replying to comments, photography, website updates. Whatever isn’t covered should be easy to see, so there are no surprises.

Term Length in a Social Media Management Contract

This is where people have the strongest feelings. Short terms feel safer. But here’s my honest view: social media rarely shows real results in the first couple of months. Trust builds slowly, and most of the momentum comes after month four or later.

That’s why many providers, including us, prefer longer commitments. It gives the content enough time to work. A fair agreement should still be clear about how changes work, like moving between plans or what happens if your business situation changes. Ask those questions before you sign, not after.

Ownership and Access

  • Can you use the finished videos however you want, including after the agreement ends?
  • Who has admin access to your social media accounts, and how is it handed back if you part ways?
  • Will you receive raw footage, or only finished videos? Many providers don’t hand over raw camera files, so make sure you know which you’re getting.

None of these are red flags on their own. You just want them clear in writing.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign a Social Media Management Contract

  • What exactly do I get each month?
  • How much of my time does this require?
  • How long is the term, and what are the options if something changes?
  • Can I move between plans?
  • What’s included in the price, and what costs extra?
  • Are prices before or after tax?
  • How do we communicate, and how often do we check in?

Red Flags in a Social Media Management Contract

  • No clear list of deliverables.
  • Promises of specific follower or view numbers.
  • Pricing that changes without notice.
  • No mention of how the relationship ends.
  • Pressure to sign the same day.

Why Clear Agreements Protect Both Sides

A clear agreement isn’t about not trusting each other. It’s about making sure everyone knows what to expect, so the relationship can focus on the work. In my experience, the best client relationships start with the most honest conversations about scope and commitment. You can see what our plans include on the Monthly Plans page.

FAQ: Social Media Management Contract

Why do agencies want longer contracts?

Because social media takes time to work, and producing content involves upfront planning and setup. Longer terms give the work a fair chance to show results.

Should I have a lawyer review it?

If you’re unsure about any terms, it’s always reasonable to have a lawyer or advisor look it over.

What if I’m not happy with the content?

Raise it early. Good providers want feedback and will adjust. Check how your agreement handles revisions and concerns.
